WELCOME WEEK: Discovering Czech Cuisine at the University Canteen
As part of our Erasmus integration week in the Czech Republic, we had a special day dedicated to discovering the university campus and its surroundings. This was an exciting opportunity to familiarize ourselves with our new academic environment, meet fellow international students, and get a taste of local culture. One of the highlights of that day was our visit to the university canteen, where we had the chance to try a traditional Czech meal.
Exploring the University Campus
The day started with a guided tour of the university. We visited various buildings, including lecture halls, libraries, and student support offices. The campus was well-organized, with modern facilities and comfortable study spaces. Our guide, a university staff member, Daria, explained how different departments operated and provided us with useful tips about student life in the Czech Republic.
Walking around, we also got to see areas dedicated to sports and extracurricular activities. Many Erasmus students, including myself, were excited about the prospect of joining clubs and participating in student events. The tour ended at the university's main restaurant, where we were about to experience our first Czech meal.
A Taste of Czech Cuisine
At lunchtime, we were served a traditional Czech dish: breaded and fried pork cutlet, known as Řízek, accompanied by boiled potatoes and a side salad. The dish closely resembles the Austrian schnitzel, but it is a staple in Czech cuisine as well. The crispy and golden-brown coating of the pork contrasted nicely with the soft, buttery potatoes. The salad, made of fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, added a refreshing touch to the meal.
The portion size was quite generous, and it was interesting to observe how the locals enjoyed their meals. Many Czech students paired their lunch with a cup of tea or a glass of Kofola, a popular Czech soft drink that tastes similar to cola but with herbal notes. Some of us were curious to try it, and while it had a unique taste, opinions were mixed!
Cultural Experience and Reflections
Sharing this meal with other Erasmus students was a great way to bond. We exchanged our first impressions of the country, talked about our backgrounds, and compared this dish to similar meals from our home countries. It was a simple yet meaningful experience that helped us connect not only with each other but also with Czech culture.
This day was more than just a campus visit, it was an immersion into student life in the Czech Republic. The university's welcoming atmosphere, combined with the culinary discovery, made this experience unforgettable. I look forward to exploring more Czech dishes during my stay and learning even more about this beautiful country!
